Research interests include localized to surface, interface and thin film characterization, development and application. Recent efforts have been in the development of advanced oxide films and of high performance semiconductor films fabricated in the ultra-vacuum environment of space. Ignatiev, as the Director of the Space Vacuum Epitaxy Center, is Principal Investigator for the Wake Shield Facility program, which has flown three times on the Space Shuttle and grown high purity epitaxial semiconductor films. In addition, Ignatiev has been focusing on high temperature superconductor and advanced oxide thin film development. The efforts have led to the development of high performance superconducting thin film wires, thin film oxide fuel cells, thin film pyroelectric uncooled IR detectors, CMR oxide multi-level memory elements, and implantable optical detectors for restoration of sight in retinally blind people.
